FAQs

With over 15 years experience creating tailored events, Solar often get asked many of the same questions. Below are just a handful of the most common queries we’re asked…

How much does it cost to book Solar?

Our fees are dependent on a few different things – date, location, and the times our band will be required as well as venue and audience size – larger venues may require that we hire in extra equipment (larger PA system, further lighting, etc.) although for the majority of venues the band are fully inclusive, supplying our own sound and lighting equipment. Please provide us with as much information as possible when making initial contact so that we can provide you with an accurate quote.

What happens when the band aren’t playing – do I need to book a DJ as well?

Generally, the choice is yours – we are more than happy for you to connect your iPod/iPhone (or similar) into our PA system to play music in our breaks, although please be aware that none of the band are DJs and won’t be able to work your device for you – if you wish to skip songs on your playlist, then you’ll need one of your guests to do this for you. We’re also happy to provide use of our PA system/lighting for up to 20 minutes after our final set, and if longer is required, we can also provide this for a modest fee!

Where are Solar based, and how far will they travel to perform?

The band are based in Devon and regularly perform all over the Westcountry (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, etc.). However, we will happily travel further afield, frequently visiting London and other major towns and cities throughout the UK as well as taking overseas bookings.

How long do the band need to set up?

Ideally, we need 90 minutes to set up and thoroughly soundcheck to ensure the best possible performance. We understand that timings can be tight on the day so, if needed, we can minimize set up to an hour (if all runs smoothly our end). Please ensure that when planning your even you allow enough time for this, as a decent set up is vital to the band providing you with the best entertainment possible. It’s in everyone’s best interest that we work as quickly as we can when setting up and soundchecking, so please don’t rush us – we’ll already be working as fast as possible! Rushed soundchecks can mean poor sound, feedback, and overlooked issues later on, leading to a less than perfect experience for you and your guests.

How much space do the band need?

The ideal space would be 6m (width) x 4m (depth) which needs to be flat, level, and completely clear. If you can give us more, great! If you have much less room to give, don’t worry: we can usually fit ourselves into any space you have available (within reason – there are six of us with drum kit, keyboards, guitars, and amps alongside our PA system!) If in doubt, please contact us to discuss.

Can we come see Solar perform before we decide on whether to go ahead with our booking?

Unfortunately, as most of the shows the band perform are for private clients, it’s difficult for us to invite guests along as we prefer not to ‘sneak in’ guests as it is generally very inappropriate for us to do so. That said, the band will occasionally play ‘public’ gigs where potential customers can see the band performing – make sure that you follow us on Twitter and Facebook (links below) where such shows are advertised, or alternatively contact us for an up-to-date list of our forthcoming public shows!

Can we choose all of the songs the band perform for our event?

By all means, give us your preferences of favourite songs from our current playlist, but we strongly advise against picking songs and arranging entire setlists due to the quite specific way in which we put together our performances. Over the years we have discovered that it is very important for us to place certain songs in certain places and this is something that has been honed after years of ‘trial and error’. With all of this in mind, we have taken the songs that sound the best live (and fill the dancefloor the most)( and spent a lot of time arranging them into unique medleys which can be up to 20 minutes long! These are designed by us to ensure constant energy and fast movement so it’s very difficult to choose the entire setlist song-by-song. What we ask for you to do instead is to inform us of any songs on our playlist that you particularly like, as well as those that you have a particular dislike for, and we’ll build our sets accordingly.

Do we need to provide food/drink for the band?

Yes please! We don’t expect a three course meal, and we don’t drink excessively on the job (most of us will be driving) but please consider the journey time we have taken to get to you, and the fact that once we arrive at the venue it’s all systems go with set up, soundcheck, and performance without a minute to spare! We work long days and late nights at venues where ‘fast food’ (especially the nutritious kind) isn’t an option, so we do appreciate some sort of refreshment somewhere along the way. None of us are divas and we won’t ever provide you with any sort of rider (except to inform that a number of the band members are vegetarian!), but it is really true that a happy and well looked after band will always result in the best performances!

Can the band set up earlier in the day before our guests arrive/before we sit down to our meal?

This may be possible depending on the commitments of the musicians on the day of your special event, however, there will be additional fees to cover time spent waiting to perform (anything over 90 minutes). If this is something you require, why not think about utilising the musicians’ skills by hiring Lush Life (a smaller jazz-focussed ensemble made up of members of Solar) to perform a selection of background jazz or even some light classical music through your meal or as your guests arrive?
